Life is rough without a Daddy at home

Ava and Daddy!

Jake went back to work this week to help support Ava's eventual, inevitable, little shoe shopping habit. We miss having him around the house! Ava and I have been on a steep learning curve, braving the world alone from 7:30 am to 6 pm. This has of course been compounded by Ava's refusal to sleep for any reasonable stretch overnight. And by reasonable I mean, say, an hour...

But, we are learning quickly, laughing some, and crying some, and fiercely trying to believe all those who promise that it gets easier. We have had some notable successes this week - we made our first public outing on Monday to meet our friend Jenna for coffee. Ava slept the entire time, apparently trying to make a liar out of me with this whole 'we're not getting any sleep' business.

The weather perked up this week, and we've made a couple trips down to the coffee shop that is a block and a half away from our house. How refreshing! I am clearly a nerd-mom with my baby, spit-up-stained shirts (it turns out dry-clean-only is a bad option....and a large percentage of my closet...), and my New England Journal of Medicine.

It also turns out it takes us quite a bit of time to get out of the house with a baby. Though we are quickly improving our out-the-door time. For our first outing, it was well over an hour between planning to leave and actually leaving. Oh...I guess I need a diaper bag. Hmm...what do I put inside the diaper bag? Diapers would be good. Oh, and wipes. Oh, and a burp cloth. Done. Oh, what about an extra blanket? Good idea. Ready. Oh, probably need a change of clothes for those explosive poopy diapers. Done. Getting ready to leave now....how about my wallet? Oh, and my phone. Keys would be helpful. Missing anything? The baby. Who needs to be strapped in and covered up and then fastened into the car. Like I said...we're improving!

Ava - you're teaching us more than you know! Happy 2-week birthday you little stinker!
Showing off her ability to wear a hairbow. Cute!

Hey Kate. I don't have any inspirational words... just wanted to say that I cried too! In fact, I still am quite hormonal and Elena is sleeping 5 to 8 hours in the night (she's nearly 3 months old). I think you're doing a great job. Doing what you are doing is the only way I stay sane. I try to get out of the house at least once a day, despite it being difficult!

Kate, Really enjoyed seeing all the new pictures and reading about your recent "adventures". :) Hang in there as Ava will eventually get her days and nights straightened out and know when she is supposed to be sleeping. It's great that you have been able to get out some as that can certainly help change the perspective. Keep the pictures coming! Love, Aunt Audrey
