Chicken Hat

So, you have heard about Ava's love for our neighbor's giant-inflatable-ghost-snow-globe. Well, Halloween is over, so it's time for the giant-inflatable-turkey-dressed-like-a-pilgrim. Don't you worry, the polar-bear-driving-a-motorcycle and the santa-coming-out-of-the-chimney will make their appearances in approximately three weeks. These inflatable works of art are usually only blown up at night, so we had told Ava that the ghosts were "taking a nap" during the day.

Now, Ava loves to run to the front window and look across the street at the turkey, which she calls a chicken. She then must always point out that he is wearing a hat, and that the ghosts are taking a nap. She will be in a completely different room, and suddenly remember them, and shout "Out! Look! Chicken! Hat!" and make a mad dash for the window. It is pretty adorable. I'm still holding strong on my "no inflatable decorations in my yard" stance. I feel just about as strongly about that as I do about never driving a minivan. "We'll see..." you're thinking. Yes we will. ;)

On a more challenging note, Ava's temper tantrums have been getting more frequent and more intense. I know everyone who knew me as a child is smugly grinning, knowing that I deserve this more than any person they know. Especially my poor Mother. :) It has been a real challenge of our patience. I know that every child throws these tantrums, but when you are out in public and everyone else's child is behaving perfectly, and yours is lying on the ground, rolling around, kicking and screaming, tears streaming down her face because she wants to do something herself, or she doesn't want to wait her turn, or half the time because she wants something you can't even figure out, you feel like the worst parent in the world! I'm not quite sure how we're going to make it through another 1-2 years of these tantrums. If anyone has any advice, I am MORE THAN HAPPY to hear it!!

On that note, here is Ava checking out the chicken-with-a-hat. It is these moments that get me through the "temper tantrum in the middle of gymnastics class because she doesn't want to wait her turn for the balance beam" moments. Sometimes a glass of wine at the end of the day helps, too. :)

A couple of weeks ago, I had to "run in" to Publix for milk. We made it out with NO milk and 2 temper tantrums/time-outs. It was very clear who else in the store had kids. They were the ones who did NOT give me dirty looks as I was enforcing time-out in front of the pumpkin bin. Similarly, mothers gave me words of encouragement the day I gave baby Anna a bath in a McDonald's bathroom sink after she soiled our 3rd (!!) backup outfit. Don't worry. Just enjoy your neighbor's tacky lawn ornaments. :)
